Addenbrooke’s bloods

If a clinician at Addenbrookes has asked you to have a blood test, it is often possible for us to book you the phlebotomy appointment at Bridge Street Medical Centre but the Addenbrooke’s clinician must give you a blood test form which you must bring with you to your appointment. We cannot take bloods for the hospital without the hospital blood test form. 

Routine monitoring bloods

Some long-term conditions, such as diabetes, heart failure and thyroid disease require monitoring bloods at regular intervals (usually annually). The practice will ask you to attend for these blood tests when they fall due; you do not need to do anything further.

Wishing a blood test for another reason

If you wish to request a blood test for any other reason, please use the button below. Your registered GP will review this form and will let you know if this is possible. If appropriate you may be offered an appointment to see a GP or a blood test appointment. Please be aware that we may not always be able to accommodate your request. Our nursing team cannot take bloods without a valid Blood Test Form from a clinician (which may be on the computer system or a print-out), or a paper Addenbrooke’s request form. Request a blood test online

Drop-in phlebotomy service – drive through

With a hospital or a GP request form, you can also attend the drive-through phlebotomy service at Newmarket Road. You do not need an appointment for this service. Your results will go directly to the requesting GP or hospital clinician, depending on who requested the test.

Extended access blood tests (out-of-hours) 

Blood test appointments are also available at the Extended Access Service during the evening and weekend, at one of their hubs. Please speak to reception if you would like to book into this service. You will need the same paperwork as above – an Addenbrookes form, or a TQUEST blood form raised by a Bridge Street Medical Centre clinician, which would need to be collected from the surgery prior to your appointment. 

Private blood tests

As an NHS organisation we are not able to see patients for private blood tests.

If a patient would like to have a blood test done privately, they will need to contact the organisation that has requested a sample and arrange for the test to be carried out via that organisation. 

Please note that, as per GMC guidance, the interpretation of tests is the responsibility of the requesting clinician; Bridge Street GPs cannot comment or act on the results of tests carried out by other clinicians.

Anaesthetic cream

You can buy a cream called Emla to numb the area before a blood test for adults or children. This is widely available from pharmacies, instructions for use are in the packet, it needs to be applied about an hour before you attend for any blood tests.

Our nursing team can only carry out blood tests for adult patients (over 16). For children you will need to book a phlebotomy appointment at Addenbrookes: 01223 348903. There may be a voicemail and you should provide child's full name, DOB, NHS number, also the name of the parents / guardians and contact details. As with adults, you will need a blood test request form before blood can be taken – an Addenbrooke’s form from the hospital consultant, if the bloods have been requested by the hospital; or a TQUEST form raised by a Bridge Street GP if the blood tests have been requested by a clinician at Bridge Street Medical Centre.

Private blood tests

The UK cervical smear programme offers a cervical smear every 3 years for females aged 25 to 64, more frequently if you have ever had an abnormal result. If you have received a notification from the national screening service that you are due for a smear, please book an appointment with our nursing team. Please note testing is controlled by the national screening service, which means we cannot request tests unless they are due.

You should not have the test while you are having a period or in the 4 days before or after your period as this can affect the sample.

If you have any worries about cervical screening or have had bad experiences in the past please let us know, by booking an appointment with your usual GP or the practice nurses beforehand, so we can work out if there are options that would make the test easier for you.

If a vaccine is given when a baby still has antibodies to the disease, the antibodies can stop the vaccine working. This is why routine childhood immunisations do not start until a baby is two months old, before the antibodies a baby gets from its mother have stopped working. This is also why it is important for parents to stick to the immunisation schedule, as a delay can leave a baby unprotected. A delay can increase the chance of adverse reactions to some vaccines, such as pertussis (whooping cough).

We ask patients with long-term conditions such as asthma, coronary heart disease and diabetes to attend annually for review. We take a team approach to our chronic disease monitoring with the doctors, pharmacy and nursing teams working together.

It is important to attend your annual review, to ensure your condition is as well-managed as it can be. After any physical checks have been completed we will ask you to book a phone appointment with the clinical pharmacist to complete a medication review, so that your prescriptions can be reauthorised for the following year.

Our goal is to move both long-term condition reviews and medication reviews into your birthday month, to help you and us remember when they are due.

Dr Amphlett and Dr Banerjee carry out cryotherapy for minor lesions, and joint injections.

• Please book a routine appointment with either Dr Amphlett or Dr Banerjee to arrange these procedures. 

Dr Banerjee also performs minor surgery in his minor operations clinic. Procedures include symptomatic cyst removal and ingrowing toenail surgery.
